Under the VAWA, individuals may be able to obtain United States residency if they face either physical violence or emotional cruelty by their United States citizen or lawful permanent resident spouses, parents or sons and daughters.
U Visa
The U visa was created by the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act for victims of certain crimes that cause substantial physical and/or mental abuse. To qualify for the U visa, individuals must have information concerning a crime and be willing to help in the investigation and/or prosecution of that crime. To be eligible, the crime must violate a United States law or have occurred in the U.S.
